Because of the Ottoman past where the society was divided up according to the religious belonging, minorities in Turkey are »religious«. In other words, only non-Muslims are perceived and treated as minorities and have, de jure and de facto some minority rights. These silts of the imperial past, manly Greek orthodox, Gregorian Armenians, Sephardi Jews, but also some other small groups, suffered during the Republican period from many abusive measures and discriminations against. This lecture will try to scrutinize how minority rights in Turkey have been implemented and / or unapplied during the last decades where a new literature of »Minority rights« has been built within the European system, especially in the Framework of the Council of Europe and the OSCE, Turkey being member of both organizations. The lecture will also explore the situation of other minorities that are not recognized as such as Kurds or Alevis in the framework of the evolutions in general human rights, including AKP’s inconsistent approach to the identity issues.
