6 August 2012, Inside Outside with Samim Akgönül on "Turks and Greeks"

On 6 August 2012 we’ll continue with Turkey-Greece relations, but this time not with a Greek working in Istanbul but with a Turk from Istanbul working (mainly) in France. Our guest will be Samim Akgönül, historian and political scientist who works as a professor at Strasbourg University and as a researcher at the French National Center for Scientific Research. His main research field are religious minorities, non-Muslim minorities in Turkey, Muslim minorities in the Balkans and New Minorities in Western Europe. Akgönül has published numerous articles and books on these issues. His most recent publication is “Turks and Greeks” (Turcs et Grecs) in French. We’ll discuss the main arguments of this new publication and more in general Turkey-Greece relations and minority issues in Turkey.

You can listen to the program live on 6 August 2012 at 10.30am Turkey time both online and on 94.9 if you are in Istanbul or vicinity or later as an mp3 on the following this page :

Turks Abroad: The Symposium on Migration and Integration in its 50th Year

21-23 May 2009 – Ankara

goc-ve-uyum

“Turks Abroad: The Symposium on Migration and Integration in its 50th Year” will be held in Ankara (Bilkent Hotel & Conference Center) between 21 – 23 May 2009 under the auspices of H.E Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the Prime Minister of the Republic of Turkey. The symposium will be organized through the cooperation of the Ministry of State of the Republic of Turkey (Prof.Dr. Mustafa Said YAZICIOĞLU) and Hacettepe University Strategical Research Centre (HÜSAM). The aim is to evaluate the migration of Turks to foreign countries within over half a century, considering the current situation, the advantages, problems, expectations and strategies about the future, to discuss all these aspects in a way enabling contribution of all parties of migration and to assess the proposed solutions within a multilateral and academic framework through a solution-oriented approach.

As Migration and Integration constitute a fact based on mutual and multilateral interaction, representatives of international organizations and institutions, high-level politicians and bureaucrats from countries where Turks are densely-populated, experts, representatives of non-governmental organizations as well as Turkish citizens who had outstanding achievements in their fields are invited to the symposium. Special emphasis has been attributed to provide a wide diversity of the participants, representing different points of view about the issues to be discussed.

Time: 10.00
Place: Dolapdere Campus, BS1
Our understanding of reality is mainly stamped by images spread through the media. The Turkish image in Germany as well as the German image in Turkey depends on what articles and reports are being published. Due to the impact the media has on the German-Turkish relationship, its responsibility is significant. The event’s aim is to illustrate what images the media creates of the other. What topics are reported about and how are they conveyed to the public? Where are the critical points, and what are their backgrounds? The objective is to emphasize the significance of the media’s responsibility and thus contribute to an enhanced German-Turkish understanding.
